This is a particularly busy time of year around campus: students are heading into finals and preparing for the winter term, and the UMSI Alumni Society Board is busy putting together local events for alumni and planning for the future.
Why I serve
UMSI is a very special place for me, both personally and professionally. I graduated with my MSI in Library and Information Services in 1997, and met my husband there, a fellow UMSI student. In honor of our School of Information connection, we married in UMSI’s Ehrlicher Room at the old West Hall location.
Since graduating from UMSI, I have focused on designing, managing and evaluating user experiences across a wide variety of industries. I am currently manager of usability services at ForeSee and am a lecturer at UMSI teaching SI 422: “Evaluation of Systems and Services.”
I have served on the UMSI Alumni Society Board since 2009 and I am proud to be this year’s president. Serving on the board has been a wonderful opportunity to deepen existing connections and create lasting new ones with the school, fellow alumni, students and the broader information community.
What we do
The Alumni Society Board has a rich history of giving back to the UMSI community in many different ways. The Alumni Society Scholarship fund was started by a board president, Margo Crist (AMLS ’69), and has provided tuition assistance to over 20 MSI students since it was first awarded in 1999. Board members frequently volunteer their time to connect with students by participating in mock interviews, panels, networking fairs and other events. The board created the new Entrepreneurial and Innovation Alumni Award in 2012, to be awarded annually along with the Distinguished Alumni Award at the UMSI Alumni Homecoming party. And regional directors are responsible for organizing UMSI alumni events in their areas.
Our vision is to foster lifelong engagement within the UMSI global community to [re]connect intellectually, professionally, and socially. We work to stimulate a continued interest in the school, work with the school to attract outstanding students, keep other alumni up-to-date with the progress of the school, help the school meet its needs for financial support from public and private sources and encourage fellowship among faculty, alumni and students.
Get on board!
We’re looking for alumni who reflect the diversity of academic and professional interests of graduates of the school — from librarians and archivists to information architects and usability engineers — to join the board. If you are interested in helping current students to find their niche, in networking with local alumni, or in some other activity you think would best serve the needs and interests of fellow alumni, the Board is a great way to find like-minded people who are working to build and improve upon our current programming. Over the last year, we’ve held several local events, including social gatherings in Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, and Washington, DC. We’re hoping to expand upon that experience and host a broader range of activities and partner more effectively with students and faculty on campus.
All board members should plan to attend the annual meeting held in Ann Arbor during the University of Michigan Homecoming weekend, October 30-November 1, 2014.
The Alumni Society Board is currently seeking alumni to fill these positions:
Regional Directors, three-year term beginning July 1, 2014
Four positions: New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, DC
The regional director attends all board meetings and develops informal alumni “clubs” in their region to assist with alumni outreach and programming. They are responsible for hosting at least one alumni event per year in their region, assisting the UMSI alumni relations office in planning alumni events in their region, publicizing the event and encouraging alumni in their region to attend the event. They must also serve on board committees and perform other duties as necessary.
Directors, three-year term beginning July 1, 2014
The directors will attend all board meetings, serve on committees and perform other duties as necessary.
