This is a particularly busy time of year around campus: students are heading into finals and preparing for the winter term, and the UMSI Alumni Society Board is busy putting together local events for alumni and planning for the future.
Why I serve
UMSI is a very special place for me, both personally and professionally. I graduated with my MSI in Library and Information Services in 1997, and met my husband there, a fellow UMSI student. In honor of our School of Information connection, we married in UMSI’s Ehrlicher Room at the old West Hall location.
Since graduating from UMSI, I have focused on designing, managing and evaluating user experiences across a wide variety of industries. I am currently manager of usability services at ForeSee and am a lecturer at UMSI teaching SI 422: “Evaluation of Systems and Services.”
I have served on the UMSI Alumni Society Board since 2009 and I am proud to be this year’s president. Serving on the board has been a wonderful opportunity to deepen existing connections and create lasting new ones with the school, fellow alumni, students and the broader information community.
What we do
The Alumni Society Board has a rich history of giving back to the UMSI community in many different ways. The Alumni Society Scholarship fund was started by a board president, Margo Crist (AMLS ’69), and has provided tuition assistance to over 20 MSI students since it was first awarded in 1999. Board members frequently volunteer their time to connect with students by participating in mock interviews, panels, networking fairs and other events. The board created the new Entrepreneurial and Innovation Alumni Award in 2012, to be awarded annually along with the Distinguished Alumni Award at the UMSI Alumni Homecoming party. And regional directors are responsible for organizing UMSI alumni events in their areas.
